Performing in the Air Show Industry

Tips for Performer Success at ICAS

What Air Show Organizers Need

Air Show Budgets & Due Diligence

This is a business. It may be non-profit or not, but it is still run as a business. Air Show Organizers have 1,3,5 and 10 year projections. They have revenue estimates, budgets and business plans (as should you). They can generally count on 2-3% of the regional population to attend the Air Show, which means they need to maximize their draw for that 2-3% to ensure there is money to support the show. Add to that, a need for an active and involved Board of Directors, committed and engaged volunteers, support from the community, sponsorship, and the list goes on. As a performer, although not directly involved in these aspects, you do need to understand what these issues are.

Variety

Variety will keep it fresh, and maximize the household draw of patrons to the Show.

Know the Patrons

The demographic changes from one venue to the next. Farming communities may have a greater interest in Vintage Aircraft ‘vs’ High Powered Jets. The ground display may include a local square dance company, instead of a younger dance troupe. Organizers of larger shows will often track what the revenue change is because of one performer to determine if that performer is of interest. Don't take it personally. You may not be a good fit for the show.

Know the Aerobatic Performers

Organizers need a Board of Directors with credibility, and who are connected to resources in the community. As a performer you also need that credibility. This is often why it is difficult to get hired for any major show, particularly in the first few years of your membership at ICAS. Nobody knows you! But we'll get to that on the next page.

Another small but important hint

Your credibility also comes from your performance on the ground. Please remember to:
